Who is this guy anyway?
I was classically trained by a mentor for six incredible years. His college degree was in anthropology, giving him a perspective way beyond the technical aspects of lighting, camera settings and posing. He understood humans, human behavior, what makes us smile and why. He let me into the fold because, as he put it “I can teach a chimpanzee to focus a camera. What I like about your work is I can see the relationship you have with the subject.”
One of the most important things he told me was, “Don’t try to be me; I’m already me. You have to be you. The only requirement I have when you’re shooting for me is that your work has to be incredible.”
He also introduced me to the works of Linda Lapp, David Peters and Denis Reggie. The latter had an outsized influence on my artistic vision for wedding photography, and coincidentally, we share a home town (New Orleans) and an alma mater, (Tulane University.)
To see what’s in my eye, look at Pierre Cartier-Bresson.
To hear what’s in my mind, listen to Chick Corea.
To know what’s in my heart, listen to Lyle Lovett.
